Torrevieja Area Guide

The Costa Blanca coastal town of Torrevieja (‘old tower’) is today, one of the best known resorts in the region. It was, up until recent years, just an insignificant fishing village, and at the start of the 19th Century consisted of just a few ramshackle cottages gathered around a ruined watchtower. Torrevieja began to grow somewhat after 1802 when the HQ for salt production in the area, was moved from La Mata to Torrevieja, by order of King Carlos IV. Torrevieja BeachAlthough salt is still important for the economy of Torrevieja, it has been overtaken by tourism and property development, which has grown enormously during recent years. Many of the new properties that has been built in the Torrevieja area have been purchased by foreign investors, many wishing to purchase their own home in the sun, the majority for use as holiday homes but a growing number for permanent re-location.
British, German and Scandinavian people in particular have chosen to settle in this area, and many facilities are in place to cater for this growing foreign community. There is of course also plenty of facilities for the resident Spanish population. A little south of Torrevieja is an area known as the Orihuela Costa, with 16km of coastline with some excellent beaches, golf courses and facilities.
This area has an even greater percentage of foreign residents and includes the resorts of Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca, La Florida,
